Migrating to the cloud without surprises: eight questions to ask first

Before moving applications and data to the cloud, it pays to answer a few simple questions. A practical list to avoid unexpected costs and blockers.

1 min read

Moving an application to the cloud is not just a technical job. Here are the questions to ask before you begin.

The questions

1. What are we moving, and why? A clear goal (cost, reliability, release speed) guides every later choice.

2. What do we have today? An inventory of applications, data and connections avoids forgotten dependencies.

3. Does everything need to move? Sometimes a hybrid solution, partly in the cloud and partly on premises, makes the most sense.

4. Where is the data? What matters is where it is stored and who can access it, especially for personal data and the GDPR.

5. How much will it cost each month? The cloud is pay as you go: you need an estimate and a way to keep it under control, which is FinOps.

6. How do we go back? A clear rollback plan reduces risk.

7. Who oversees security? Roles, access and responsibilities must be decided beforehand, not afterwards.

8. Who manages the change? People and processes change along with the technology.

How we work on it
